Every landscape needs a medium to realize itself. But if, in the spiral in which every creative act unfolds, when a future work is close to birth, space cracks into something more like time, and time, in turn, tangles with certain evanescent figures, almost spectral, then surely, only one Dimension will remain, another special Landscape, until the spiral returns to a circle, a vicious merry-go-round, a transparent ring.
Speak, Memory, Speak is the first step Fanny & Alexander takes into the Nabokovian literary landscape, an exploration dealing with apparitions and their strange, merciless language, with a superhuman desire for reality.
Initially commissioned by Xing and TTV Festival/Performing Arts on Screen as part of the project Italian Landscapes (more info at www.xing.it, in the productions section) in the form of lounge theatre, it was presented for its Italian premiere at the Grand Hotel in Riccione with a screening on three large side-by-side screens.
The work was later modified and adapted to a performative situation, with live presence on stage and the appearance of the text, to be listened to through headphones. This hypnagogic experience debuted at the Inteatro Festival in Polverigi.
The young chronophobic “You Person” retraces the vast emptiness of their prenatal time (they are themselves a character from a fiction yet to come), and the even more threatening emptiness that looms beyond their conjectural and hypothetical future existence. Desperately, they try to hold onto that meager fragment of reality that the live nature of this video allows them. They are expected to accept the two black voids, just as they accept the illusory and fleeting vision that flashes and flickers between them. “But every Imagination, the supreme delight of the immortal and the immature, should always, in its way, be limited.” (V. N.)
Did you understand? Hey, you! Person! Did you understand? You should really take it easy!…
