• Opera Futura Laboratori per un Nuovo Teatro Musicale is a project conceived and coordinated by Giordano Montecchi

“North” is a musical work that, together with South, forms part of Opera Futura, a project promoted by the Emilia Romagna Region. The primary goal of the project is to establish effective collaboration between opera theaters and innovative companies operating in the regional territory.
The two performances, a reimagining of operatic languages, continue the multi-year investigation Fanny & Alexander have dedicated to The Wizard of Oz.
The protagonist, Dorothy, an avatar of the spectator, is transported by her cyclone to the South and then to the North of the fantastical universe through which her adventure unfolds.
Both performances are inspired by the famous question posed by the Wizard: “I am Oz the Great and Terrible, and who are you?”
North is one of two possible musical responses from two possible Dorothys.
It revolves around a new and utopian musical instrument: the pedonium, a large “keyboard”, a very particular synthesizer.
It is an uneven floor, as if wild, perhaps a stage in disuse, perhaps a work of art.
From the planks of this floor, resembling giant keys, emerge voices, melodies, pre-verbal sounds, light phenomena, and sound ghosts.
The protagonist, Dorothy, “plays” this floor by crossing and practicing it, producing a true musical score.
Starting from an initial confrontation with the great operatic tradition, it begins a real journey in sound, a descent through the voice into the most intimate part of oneself.
